Esquerra Republicana completely and utterly reject the denigrating situation seen at the borders between Turkey and Greece.

We likewise find it is extremely grave that a Member State of the European Union and signatory of the treaties protecting refugees should be violating human rights, asylum and refugee rights, and social rights so blatantly.

The images reaching us of Greek authorities trying to wreck boats with refugees, racist citizens prevent their reaching Greek territory, or the extensive military deployment across the border territory by the Greek government are very worrying.

Equally worrying is that the European Union is not taking a firm step in order to ensure that a member complies with its own treaties or that it is allowed to censure the information that independent journalists are trying to convey from Greek territory.

It is also inadmissible that the Turkish government should have begun a war on Syria as are the conditions it is placing Syrian refugees in. No citizen should have to leave their home to safeguard their physical integrity. Violence and weapons only further aggravate social injustices.

Esquerra Republicana calls for an end to repression and war. Greece and the European Union member states must admit the refugees and respect their right to asylum. As Republicans, we will always be supportive of respect for human rights.
